How to rank high on Google
Altavista, HotBot, Excite, Infoseek and Lycos were the search engine leaders in 1997, when Google entered the market. Just 4 years later Google has managed to emerge as the best online search engine. And apparently it will remain in this position for a long time. Google became the secondary provider for Yahoo in 2000, taking Inktomi's place, which consolidated its position in the top. It serves over 70 million searches daily.
We don't and can't know if Google will be dethroned, or if it will advertise different sponsors like other search engines did. What we know are the algorithms Google uses to index the sites, and we want to share this information with you. The information will place your page among the first ones, and will bring large traffic to your site.
Something before we start
You might wonder how come we share such a priceless information, especially since the search engine websites try to hide it. Even the ones that manage to find it out will keep it for their selves and won't divulge it. By knowing this they will make money, because since their site will be on the top, it will receive hits. Telling this secret means throwing away money, because you can be sure that others will use it to make a profit.
We offer the information for free, we don't charge any money. Other sites also offer it for free, but they are not up to date with the information. One of our reasons for giving the information for free is that since we have managed to find out the algorithms, we will eventually find a way to keep our pages on the top spots even with competition. Another reason is that we want to stop you from paying hundreds of dollars to different companies which promise you what we promise, but in the exchange of money.
If the information they offer is better than ours that's good because it was worth paying; but most of the times you don't receive what you wanted. Many can't pay, and they get left behind. That's not right.
We have achieved Top 10 rankings on competitive 2-word key phrases with around 500,000 returns, and that is the reason we afford giving you advices. We are not paid for this, we haven't stole or receive the "secret formula", but we have used a method that proved successful. We are not the best but we are among the best.
1st Key to Rank High on Google
One aspect preferred by Google's algorithm is the Open Directory Project (DMOZ). Try to index your page in the ODP with the best keywords and description. The sites that are present in the ODP seem to be preferred by Google. We don't know if Google prefers the keywords into the category of the page, but you can try inserting them.
Once you have indexed your page in the ODP, try to do the same with some sub-pages. There are many sites that have their sub-pages indexed as well, even if ODP states that they only index one page per site. Don't exaggerate with the submitting of the sub-pages because you might get banned permanently.
The page you submit must have the content relevant to the category that it's submitted at. Also don't hammer the submitting, wait a period of time before you submit another page. Once again the most important keywords should be presented in the title and in the description. Try to stick to the subject; do not insert extra words in the title, just to make it longer.
Select the best key phrase for each page submitted, and select it carefully. It will be very difficult to change the key phrase back once you have submitted the page. You can try to index different pages into different categories. In this moment you will face either fear or greed. Fear because knowing that too many indexed pages can get you banned, and greed because you want to have as many pages indexed as possible.
2nd Key to Rank High on Google
You have to adjust your pages' HTML settings after you have submitted the pages into the ODP. A good HTML optimization can make the difference, even if it's not as important as the ODP insertion. These are the areas you should optimize in order that Google's algorithm to match your page:
<The Title>: should contain the keywords but also some extra words. A title of 3-5 words is preferable for a single keyword.
<The Headings>: To have even more success place your keywords into a H1 or H2 heading; most of the times it will raise your page a few spots. It is best if you don't add any extra words into the headings. For very long pages a H3 heading is preferable.
<The Density>: It is best if the keywords are found pretty often in the pages, even if Google is not to picky when it comes to word density. <This tool> can help you measure the density of this tool, and a slight modification of the density should not bother you. It is best if you pack the keywords at the beginning on the page, and then scatter them across the page.
<The special words>: apparently writing the words in bold text or in link text won't help you too much. From these two the link text is preferable.
<The Meta tags>: are not used by Google, but it won't harm you if you insert them.
<The Link Popularity>: the links from other sources can boost your page, especially if the sources are very big, like Yahoo.
<The Themes>: are not used by Google's algorithms.
<The Click Popularity>: not used by Google.
These are the keys to make your page preferred by Google's algorithms. Try it for yourself and see if it will help you. Maybe in the future we will be able to present you FAST's and AltaVista's algorithms, but that only time could tell.
