The Meta Tags
The Meta Tags
You can place between the <HEAD> and the </HEAD> tags of the HTML code the Meta tags. The Meta tags help the search engines find your page easier based on different categories. The description, keywords, and robot tags are the most important, as the other types of tags won't help your site in the searches. These are the ones that will improve your site's position:
The description tag:
<META name="description" content="A search engine shows the content of this tag below the title of your site when it appears in the results.">
This tag is very important to your site, not only because it helps placing your page in a respective position but also because people can see what your site is about when a search is effectuated. The name of your site will appear and right bellow the description of it. Be sure that you write your own description because otherwise the search engines will do it for you and they won't do it properly.
When you write this tag, write it as best as you can because people will click on the name of the site based on the description. If they see the name of the site but without a proper description, maybe just some randomly words many will be in doubt to click on it.
Do not make the description tag too long, 13 words is more than enough. Try to make it as accurate as possible, and to reflect only what is related to the content of your site. If there are too many words, the search engines will cut some words. You don't know which words will be cut. Sometimes the most important ones, the ones which describe your site will be cut and you will lose visitors; so what is the point in overdoing the description?
The search engines usually don't cut the beginning words so if you decide to write a longer description, place the most important words at the beginning of it. Besides making your words cut, a longer description tag also adds weight to the relevant words and reduces the boost of your site in the searches.
Remember that the description tag is not used by Google.
The keywords tag:
<META name="keywords" content="hot dogs information recipes">
The keywords tag contains words related to your site. It is not important what method of separation is used when writing these keywords, what is important is that the keywords will boost your site some positions. The people visiting your site won't see them; and neither will they be shown by the search engines.
The words used should describe your site and you shouldn't use words that have nothing to do with the content of your site. You should write around 10 words, and remember not to repeat the words too much. The keywords tag was one of the most important elements which the search engines used in their searches, but it's not the case anymore. The use of different algorithms has reduced the efficiency of the keywords tag.
The robots tag:
<META name="robots" content="parameters">
The robots tag is somewhat similar to the keywords one because it is only seen by the search engines and not by the people. In the above formula commands such as INDEX, FOLLOW, NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW must replace the word parameters. The spider will use this commands and do what they state: INDEX will make the spider index the page, FOLLOW will make the spider follow the links present on the page, and the NO commands will do the opposite of the INDEX and FOLLOW one.
The <META name="robots" content="index, follow"> formula should be used to make sure that the spider indexes the page and follows the links. The robots tag won't help your page too much; it is more useful if it's used as a counter measure, meaning that it should be used for the NO commands. The <robots.txt> file will forbid the spider to follow a link or to index a page if the NO commands can't do it.
The refresh tag:
<META HTTP-EQUIV=Refresh CONTENT="1; URL=http://www.apromotionguide.com/">
This tag will redirect the visitors from one page to another. This tag is not too favored amongst the search engines because it was or is associated with doorway pages. A link to other page would be less risky but will have same efficiency. The Java Script redirects can be used but with heed.
