Kahnawake Mohawk Tribe Inquiry
By Jane Eagle, Dec 18th 2007The presumed authority of the Canadian Mohawk, first Nation tribe in Kahnawake was under investigation this week. Furthermore, the tribe has to pay penalties of $2 million for its allegedly illicit gambling activities with Golden Palace online casino.
The Kahnawake Gaming Commission lodges hundreds if not thousands of online gambling operations to which it has approved licenses over the past years. Actually, it is generally known that 60% of all online gambling profits go through the territory.
The response of the tribe is an opinion that is of interest for both the Quebec government prosecuting them and the gambling community as a whole.
Chuck Barnett of the Mohawk Internet Technologies (MIT) board declared that gambling operators who are approved by Kahnawake need not fear the move. "The fine against Golden Palace, JW have little, if anything to do with the jurisdiction of the Mohawks of Kahnawake." he added
The spokesperson also said that Kahnawake has recognized and valued the gambling policies of the Quebec Minister of Security since the late 90's. In fact, Kahnawake and Quebec have Ten Administrative Agreements legalizing their dealings.
Now, after setting the facts straight we think that the story was exaggerated by Canadian and web media. We will wait to see Quebec taking a decision and then the judges will follow.
