UK Gambling Act - The Reason For Limited Spam?
By Ellen Smith, Jan 7th 2008Spam has bothered Internet users for years and continues to annoy them today. Potential victims of spam harassment are children which can be exposed to inappropriate ads.
Online gambling companies choose alternative solutions to get their brands and services out in the advertising world after they were kept outside the advertising mainstream. One of those solutions includes social networking sites like Myspace and Bebo where a large number of the members are underage. So, within such media children 7 to 16 years old might be open to the elements of dating services, nudity and gambling.
This brings into discussion a classic impasse: solve the exposed children problem by keeping the industry out of the mainstream or approve the gambling industry and regulate it so as to evade such risky side-effects. According to a study prepared in the UK by the National Consumer Council 25% of ads on websites popular with children were in fact meant for adults.
Also, according to the study solicitor’s conclusion, one that we support is to create better regulations for these websites. In addition to this, we also suggest that online gambling companies should be allowed to advertise like any other legit industry.
The study was performed before the approval of the Gambling Act in the UK in September. After these rules were implemented the world of online gambling changed radically. Now, online gambling companies are allowed into mainstream media markets having their activities monitored under strict and clear laws. Now, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) says, "only permitted advertisers can advertise in the UK."
